Brandon Ballengée: National Amphibians & Biodiversity Study (2007-8)

During 2007, ecological artist Brandon Ballengée led a series of public field-trips, study days and workshops investigating amphibian and insect biodiversity, working with the public of all ages as well as collaborating scientists. These projects have been an integral part of Ballengee's Malamp project, which is a study into declining amphibians in the UK, in collaboration with Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Gunpowder Park Essex and Space Studios London.

Universe Gallery (2006-7)

The Universe Gallery is a major collaborative project between Arts Catalyst and Mulberry School, a secondary school for girls in Tower Hamlets, London. Artists Tony Hall, Joanna Griffin & Kate Tierney have been working with students to transform the bare school corridors into a multimedia interactive exhibition. The first phase deals with the physics of the early universe.

Space Day (2007)

The Arts Catalyst ran an art-science day focusing on space for the whole of Lambeth Academy, a secondary school in Clapham, London. Artists were Tony Hall, Joanna Griffin; Mandinga Arts, Dimitri Launder and Joel Grey.

Near Earth (2006)

Near Earth was a week of workshops for young people (14-19 years) exploring space through digital photography, animation, sound and music, drama and the performing
arts. The workshops were led by Semiconductor, Luke Jerram, Kate Tierney, Antony Hall, Trevor Mathison, Mat Fox, Marcus Ahlers, Hilary Westlake and Morag Wightman. Scientists Chris Welch and Kevin Fong gave insights and inspiration of the science of space travel and observation.

Srishti SpaceBaby Workshop (2006)

Workshop led by London Fieldworks for students at the Srishti School of Art, Design & Technology.

East of Eden (2004-2006)


East of Eden was an ambitious collaborative project between artist Lucy Stockton-Smith and the Arts Catalyst with Sandwich Technology College in Kent. Lucy worked with teachers and students to plan, design, build and fully utilise two geodesic ecology domes in the grounds of the school. Each dome houses a microenvironment in which plants are grown. The first is an organic environment incorporating an ant farm, wormery and frog pond. The second utilises modern commercial farming techniques, including pesticides and intensive cultivation.

Sound Forms (2005)

Antony Hall led 5-week workshop programme with Heathbrook Primary School in London to explore sound through electronics and self made instruments.

Ecology: Action Research (2005)

Antony Hall worked at Heathbrook Primary School in South London. The school has a beautiful and flourishing wild life garden that contains a pond. Antony explored the garden and pond with the pupils to develop an informed sense of wonder and respect for the animal life they found there.

Sally Hampson worked with Oakley Special School in Tunbridge Wells. Sally works with narrative and also worked with the school’s garden, creating an imaginative nature expedition in the wildlife garden, using drawing, painting and sculpture.

The Bird-Lake Museum (2001 - 2004)

The Bird-Lake Museum is a travelling museum of natural history, created by young people (10 - 15 year olds) with special educational needs with artist Sally Hampson. The original participating schools in 2001 included Oakley School, Tunbridge Wells, Kent; Waveney School, Tonbridge, Kent; Turney School, East Dulwich, London; Rosendale School, East Dulwich, London. In 2004, Sally took the museum to Sevenoaks Library, Kent, for a week long residency, in which Seal Primary School and Lady Boswell's Primary School participated.

The Lab (2003 - 4)

The Arts Catalyst worked with Castle Community Secondary School over one school year to develop a series of interdisciplinary science-arts projects and train artists to run projects in this area. Artists involved were Antony Hall, Marcus Ahlers, Estelle Jourd, Catherine Walker, Lucy Stockton-Smith, Sally Hampson, Jose Eugenio Marchesi, Siobhan O’Neill, Eddie George & Anna Piva (Flow Motion), Luke Jerram and Kate Tierney

Clean Rooms (2002-3)

Biotech drama-based workshops led by Michael Carklin at the Natural History Museum in themes of Transgenics, Genetics & Animals, Ethics of Science Research. Photography field trips and talks by Brandon Ballangee involving the public (14+) in an exploration of humanity's intervention in nature since ancient times. Arts workshops (all ages) led by Ruth Ben-Tovim for a wide range of community groups in Oldham.

Bower Birds (2003)

Extending our work to KS1, Sally Hampson undertook projects with Fairleigh House School, Pimlico, London and Year 2 of Sevenoaks County Primary School, Kent, looking at the entrancing behaviour of Australia's bower birds. The children searched for their 'treasures' to decorate their bowers. Sally Hampson's own exhibition of bowers was at London Zoo in July 2003.

Zero Gravity (2000 -2003)

Projects (primarily for Year 6 pupils) exploring the theme of gravity and zero gravity through dance, science and art have also been successfully adapted for younger and older pupils and adults. Led by various artists, including Tim Millar, Morag Wightman, Graham Hudson, Karen Lowe, Nicola Triscott. Participating schools: William Patten School, Hackney, London; Gayhurst Primary School, Hackney, London; Otford Primary School, Otford, Kent; Langafel CE Primary School, Longfield, Kent; Betty Laywood Primary School, Hackney, London (adapted for a gifted & talented group of year 1&2); St Mary's Primary School, Islington, London; Grasmere Primary School, Hackney London (year 5). All Year 6 except where stated.

Flying and Falling (2003)

Interdisciplinary project exploring preferred learning styles with year 5 pupils at John the Baptist Primary School Hoxton, London. Led by Tim Millar, Morag Wightman and Sally Hampson. Looking at manned flight, animal flight & human flight through a range of activities involving sculpture, dance, performance and other hands-on activities. Visits to Science Museum and Dinobirds exhibition at the Natural History Museum. Film of project available to educationalists and teachers. Contact us

CWETI (2002)

Pilot project led by Sally Hampson working with children and young people with specific learning difficulties (Year 6) with Fairley House School on the theme 'Communicating with Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence. The pupils designed their own alphabets and languages, and created a pod with ideas of the Earth conveyed through objects to be sent into outer space. The pod was presented to delegates at a SETI symposium for composing messages for interstellar communication in Paris, March 2002.

Makrolab (2002)

Miles Chalcraft's rocket project with Bredalbane Academy, Aberfeldy, Scotland. The pupils designed, made and successfully launched their own rocket.

The Insect Project (2000)

Multidisciplinary projects, relating to Jan Fabre's Consilience film at the Natural History Museum, with Waveney School, Tonbridge, and Homerton School, Hackney, London, exploring the life cycles and behaviour of insects. Led by Sally Hampson and Karen Lowe.

Chronicles: Solar Eclipse (1999)

A week-long performance, technology and science project for young people on the theme of the total eclipse of the sun, organised as part of the Tower Hamlets Summer University, August 1999, which culminated in a performance of solar eclipse music and poetry.

Expedition Space (1999)

An eclipse and space project leading to design and production of interact CD-Rom 'Expendition Space' (Sebright Primary School - Years 5&6). Led by Marisa Lea and Vivi Lachs with choreographer Karen Lowe. Contact us to order a free copy (free to schools subject to availability - 1 copy per school.

Atomic (1998)


Projects led by 'nuclear sculptor', James Acord, with secondary schools, sixth forms and art colleges in London and Nottingham. Designing sculptural reliquaries and warning markers for nuclear waste in the context of the science and history of nuclear energy (GCSE, A'level). Teachers pack linked to GCSE science curriculum.

In Music and Science (1994-7)

Appreciating and composing music whilst learning about the science of music - patterns, vibrations, mind and body (primary schools). London primary schools. Led by Graham Brand and Sam Mason, Jonathan Wheeler and Rebecca.
