JOIN OUR MAILING LISTThe Arts Catalyst commissions art that experimentally and critically engages with science. We bring together people across the art/science divide and beyond to explore science in its wider social, political and cultural contexts. We produce provocative, playful, risk-taking projects to spark dynamic conversations about our changing world.
Since 1993, Arts Catalyst has worked nationally and internationally to promote understanding and cooperation between the arts and sciences. We seek new ways to involve artists, scientists and the wider public in a discourse about science in society, its direction and impact. Our work is primarily invested in developing a dual discourse within the contemporary arts and in examining the relationship of modern science with society. We organise exhibitions, events, workshops, residencies, laboratories, conferences, research projects, and educational and participatory projects to develop and progress these ideas and exchanges.
The primary focus of The Arts Catalyst's activities is the commissioning and presentation of new artists' projects. These projects are not media-specific, but are commissioned around particular strands of investigation (such as Air and Space, Biotechnology, Ecology and Dark Places), themed exhibitions (including Body Visual, Atomic, CleanRooms and Space Soon), or from research projects with individual artists or artist groups that develop over time.
The Arts Catalyst's commissions and events are presented in a range of venues: art galleries, museums and other public spaces. We aim to attract and involve a wide audience in our activities and investigations.
We have active participation and education programmes for all ages, which aim to encourage creative exploration within an interdisciplinary framework, develop creative and artistic skills and understanding, and deepen understanding of the relationship between science and the wider world.
