| The artists and scientists undertaking research residencies on the Makrolab, summer 2002 Scotland, were: Anna Jakomulska : constructing a spatial database of natural environment using GIS and remote sensing techniques, the database will be available for interdisciplinary environmental research Matthew Biedermann : reconfiguring data, gathered through Makrolab technology, so it can be viewed and heard - audio data to video, radar as audio Abigail Reynolds & Fraser MacDonald : Aesthetic and cognative encounter with extreme environments. Abigail's diary from weeks 1 & 2 Ewen Chardronnet : weather analysis, collecting images from remote sensing, making music from intercepted messages. Ewen's reports Ilana Halperin : compiling information and recording everyday conversations to explore intersection between personal, historic and geologic time. Ilana's reports Tomasz Szymura : is looking at contrasts of woodland regeneration between heavily and relatively ungrazed areas Lisa Parks + Ursula Biemann : manipulating satellite images & sounds to create 'orbital animations' Lisa & Ursula's reports & introduction Katrin Lund : research will gauge opinion on an inclusive approach to managing recreational walking Miles Chalcraft : Launch of rockets with data collecting devices Helen Johard : Intuitive drawings as a base to develop performative events Calum Stirling : use of Geographical Information System data in the development of soundscape environments Helen Evans : intercept and use existing pollution data on local ecology - visualised on the web Stephen Kovats + Nina Czegledy: Aurora Universalis - research on aurora borealis as ionospheric disturbance, with relation to modes of global telecommunication systems and media based mobility Honor Harger + Adam Hide : radio astronomy' is a plan to create an online radio station at the Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Center (VIRAC) in Latvia. At Makrolab we will create a communication link with collaborators in Riga and Irbene in Latvia; research methods of collecting aural data from planetary and solar radiation; and explore ways that aural data collected at the VIRAC can be presented and contextualised online. We will also be researching 'Van Eck TV'. Van Eck surveillance techniques enable data to be collected from computer monitors, using the monitors' electromagnetic emmissions. Van Eck techniques show that computer data is more vulnerable than people expect, as surveillers do not need access to a computer's hard drive in order to observe the data and activity of a computer Tim Knowles : drawings by attaching pen to helium balloons - digital photos of drawings build weather patterns - and making insect flight path photographs.
