| The Roundhouse and The Arts Catalyst bring you NEAR EARTH A Week of Space Creation for young people (14-19 years) Near Earth there is infinite space for humans to explore. Join Arts Catalyst artists and scientists on a journey that explores space through digital photography, animation, sound and music, drama and the performing arts. The artists, film-makers, dancers, musicians and theatre directors leading workshops are Semiconductor, Luke Jerram, Kate Tierney, Tony Hall, Trevor Mathison, Mat Fox, Marcus Ahlers, Hilary Westlake and Morag Wightman. Chris Welch, Kevin Fong and Mark Lythgoe are among the participating scientists giving insights and inspiration of the science of space travel and observation. Make your voice heard on the future of space travel and showcase your work as part of the international art and space event Space Soon taking place at the ROUNDHOUSE. Near Earth: Space Animation Led by Semiconductor Bring the stars to life! Make movies of the planets. Explore astronomy and uncover things not seen before. Work with semi-conductor artists Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhadt. Take the snapshots produced from satelites orbiting the earth and explore how to create the time-lapse digital animation sequences. Course Number: DA 6 Near Earth: Space Digital Film & Photography Led by Luke Jerram Can we believe our eyes? We've all seen films and photos of UFO'S - does that mean they're real? How do we know the moon landing wasn't fake? Or was it? Join artist Luke Jerram to explore the tricks of film and photography. Learn how the experts manipulate images from space. Will your movie convince your friends we've landed on Mars? Course Number PG3 Near Earth: Space Radio Led by Kate Tierney and Tony Hall Did you know that the Roundhouse is really a giant radio telescope? It's receiving transmissions from out of space. The experts are stumped. It takes a particular type of brainwave, present only in the teenagers brain to tune into particular rhythms being beemed down. Help sound artists Kate Tierney and Tony Hall to decode and transmit music of the spheres. Course Number: RD 2 Near Earth: Space Music 1 - Recorded Led by Trevor Mathison How will you record your journey to space? What will you take with you to remind you of home? How about creating an audio postcard? Use your ring tones and use our mini disc recorders to create your own personal soundscape. Then present it in surround sound. Work with musician Trevor Mathison to experiment with panning, overlaps, fades, dissolves, delay and reverbs. Course Number: MC 17 Near Earth: Space Music 2 - Live Led by Mat Fox Ever wanted to Space Jam? This is your chance to be part of an out-of-this world band and create some truly cosmic sounds and record your own live sessions with musician Mat Fox. Course Number: MC 18 Near Earth: Exploring Energy Led by Marcus Ahlers What energy will we use in space? Where will we get it? Can you create energy and can you sustain it? What will we do for energy when oil runs out? If you discovered the answer to the last question, would you become the first trillionaire? Collect electricity from sunlight with the artist Marcus Ahlers. Build hydrogen fuel cells. Become an energy technologist of the future. Course Number: DA 5 Near Earth: Space Drama Led by Hilary Westlake What role does Outer Space play in our imaginations and in our lives today? Explore this theme using iconic music and images. Create a striking theatrical performance with renowned director Hilary Westlake. Course Number: DM 4 Near Earth: Space Movement Led by Morag Wightman What would it be like to move in zero gravity? Can we dance in weightlessness? Place your body mentally and physically in motion. Work suspended off the floor and explore aerial dance with Morag Wightman, one of the very few dancers to experience zero gravity first hand.
